Whit Merrifield Announces Retirement, Apologizes to Phillies Fans

Jun 25 2025

Whit Merrifield, known for his versatility on the field, confirmed his retirement from Major League Baseball on Tuesday, offering a heartfelt apology to Philadelphia Phillies fans who had anticipated more from him during his brief tenure with the team.

Just a month after signing with the Phillies, Merrifield embraced fatherhood, stating that the arrival of his child played a significant role in his decision to step away from the game. "A 6 pound, 6 ounce gift from God my wife and I were blessed with in March of 2024," he noted, highlighting the shift in priorities that comes with parenthood.

In a candid letter shared on social media, Merrifield reflected on the demands of professional baseball, admitting, "I can no longer give that effort. At this point in life, I'd much rather chase around a toddler than chase sliders." His words resonate with many who understand the balancing act between personal life and professional aspirations.

Born in Florence, South Carolina, Merrifield was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 2010 and made his major league debut in 2016. His career included three All-Star selections in 2019, 2021, and 2023. Notably, he led the league with 42 doubles in 2021 and was among the top players with 10 triples in 2019.

His time with the Phillies was short-lived, spanning just 53 games where he struggled at the plate, finishing with a .199 batting average. Following his release from Philadelphia, he concluded his career with the Atlanta Braves, a team he had long admired.

"Philly, I liked you way more than you liked me. Sorry I stunk for you," Merrifield expressed, acknowledging the disconnect between expectations and performance. He found solace in ending his career with the Braves, reflecting on his childhood dreams.

As he wrapped up his letter, Merrifield expressed gratitude for his experiences in baseball: "I loved all the moments. All the highs and even all the lows. I'm grateful for the way this game molded me. I can't wait to tell my story to my daughter one day. What a ride. Thanks for everything."
