Tigers Fall to Royals 1-0, Ending Winning Streak

May 31 2025

In a tightly contested matchup, the Detroit Tigers were edged out by the Kansas City Royals, suffering a 1-0 defeat that ended their five-game winning streak on Saturday afternoon.

The game's lone run came in the eighth inning when Vinnie Pasquantino connected for a single, bringing home Nick Loftin. This pivotal hit occurred with one out, showcasing Pasquantino's ability to deliver under pressure despite being moved down to seventh in the batting order due to the left-handed starter Tarik Skubal.

Pasquantino's bloop hit fell into short left field off Beau Brieske, who took the loss, marking his record at 1-2. Loftin was a standout for Kansas City, contributing two of the team's four hits, including a double earlier in the inning.

John Schreiber earned the win for the Royals, improving his record to 2-2, while Carlos Estevez secured his 16th save of the season, successfully converting 18 opportunities.

Both starting pitchers exhibited remarkable control throughout the game. Skubal surrendered only two singles, while Michael Wacha allowed just a walk in his first six innings of work.

Wacha's performance was particularly impressive; he faced a no-hitter through 6 1/3 innings before Colt Keith broke through with a single up the middle. This marked Wacha's fourth-longest no-hit effort of his career. He concluded his outing with seven shutout innings, yielding just one hit and one walk while striking out six batters.

Skubal matched Wacha's intensity, also completing seven innings with two hits allowed, no walks, and seven strikeouts to his name.

The eighth inning proved crucial as both teams turned to their bullpens. However, offensive opportunities remained scarce throughout the game. Neither starter permitted a baserunner to reach second base until Loftin's single in the fifth inning, which ended with him being caught stealing.

The series will wrap up on Sunday afternoon as the Tigers prepare to send RHP Keider Montero (2-1, 4.54 ERA) to the mound against LHP Kris Bubic (5-2, 1.45) for Kansas City.
