Blue Jays Dominate Phillies in 9-1 Victory

Jun 05 2025

Bo Bichette launched a two-run homer, while Myles Straw and Tyler Heineman each contributed two hits and three RBIs, propelling the Toronto Blue Jays to a decisive 9-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday. This defeat marked the Phillies' sixth loss in their last seven games, deepening their recent struggles.

Alejandro Kirk also shone for the Blue Jays, recording three hits, scoring once, and driving in a run as Toronto secured two wins out of three in the series against Philadelphia.

Chris Bassitt, the Blue Jays' right-hander, showcased his skills by allowing just one run and five hits over a season-high seven innings, earning his third win in four starts with a record of 6-3.

For the Phillies, Nick Castellanos stood out with three hits, while Kyle Schwarber managed an RBI single. However, Philadelphia struggled significantly with runners in scoring position, finishing the game with a disappointing 1 for 7.

Despite scoring six runs in the first inning of the series opener, the Phillies only managed to tally four runs across the remaining two games. They entered this matchup having won their previous five road series, but their momentum has clearly faltered.

Jesús Luzardo, the left-handed pitcher for Philadelphia, faced difficulties once again after a career-worst outing against Milwaukee. On Thursday, he surrendered eight runs and nine hits in just 2 1/3 innings, marking a season-low performance.

In the second inning, Straw and Heineman both hit RBI doubles off Luzardo, setting the stage for Bichette's eighth homer that capped a four-run frame. The Blue Jays continued their offensive onslaught in the third inning, where Straw's two-run single and an error by Trea Turner on Heineman's fly ball led to two additional runs.

In an unusual turn of events, outfielder Weston Wilson took to the mound for the Phillies in the eighth inning, pitching a scoreless frame.

Notably, Toronto's star player Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 0 for 5, ending his impressive streak of reaching base safely in 34 consecutive games.

The Blue Jays have proven to be formidable when scoring five or more runs, boasting an impressive record of 20-2 in such games.

Looking ahead, the Phillies will send right-hander Joe Ross (2-1, 4.34 ERA) to the mound against Pittsburgh on Friday. Meanwhile, Toronto has yet to announce a starter for their upcoming game against Minnesota.
