Brewers Complete Sweep of Phillies with Late-Inning Heroics

Jun 01 2025

In a decisive seventh inning, pinch-hitter Jake Bauers delivered a two-run double that propelled the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, sealing a three-game sweep and extending their winning streak to seven games.

Bauers stepped in for Eric Haase after Christian Yelich exited the game due to a bruised right hand, sustained from a hit-by-pitch in the first inning.

The game was tied at 2 when Trea Turner’s fielding error allowed a run to score for the Brewers. Bauers then doubled down the left-field line off Orion Kerkering (4-2), giving Milwaukee the lead.

This series marked Milwaukee's first sweep in Philadelphia since 2015, showcasing their dominance in recent matchups.

Jackson Chourio contributed significantly with two hits and an RBI, marking his third consecutive multihit game against the Phillies.

Jose Quintana made a successful return from the injured list, pitching five innings and allowing two runs on four hits, while walking four and striking out three.

Nick Mears (1-0) secured the win with a scoreless sixth inning, followed by Jared Koenig and Abner Uribe, who each delivered scoreless frames. Trevor Megill closed the game with his 11th save in 12 opportunities.

Ranger Suarez, starting for the Phillies, left the game after allowing Caleb Durbin's double to start the seventh. He finished with two runs—one earned—over six innings.

J.T. Realmuto and Kyle Schwarber provided early offense for the Phillies with RBI singles in the first two innings, but the team has now lost four consecutive games.

The Brewers capitalized on defensive mistakes in the seventh inning. Weston Wilson misplayed a liner from Durbin into a double. With two outs and two runners on base, Kerkering induced a ground ball from William Contreras, but Turner’s error allowed Durbin to score, tying the game and setting the stage for Bauers’ pivotal hit.

This victory marks Milwaukee's second consecutive three-game sweep, having previously taken three straight from the Boston Red Sox at home before heading to Philadelphia. Prior to this streak, they had not swept any series of three games or more all season.

Next, the Brewers will travel to Cincinnati for a three-game series, with Aaron Civale (0-1, 6.00 ERA) slated to start Monday night.

The Phillies will have a day off on Monday before heading to Toronto for another three-game series, where Zack Wheeler (6-2, 2.96 ERA) is set to take the mound for Tuesday's opener.
