Giants Fall to Padres in Extra Innings Despite Webb's Strong Performance

Jun 03 2025

In a tense matchup, Jose Iglesias delivered a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, allowing automatic runner Jake Cronenworth to score and securing a 1-0 victory for the San Diego Padres over the San Francisco Giants on Monday night.

The inning began with Tyler Wade executing a sacrifice bunt against Ryan Walker (1-3), setting the stage for Iglesias' decisive play.

Robert Suarez (1-1) faced a challenge in the ninth when he allowed a leadoff single to Patrick Bailey but managed to escape without conceding a run, ultimately earning the win.

Logan Webb showcased his skills, striking out seven batters and issuing no walks over eight scoreless innings. Despite his impressive performance, which included outdueling Stephen Kolek for significant stretches, Webb was left without a win as the Giants failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

In the seventh inning, Jeremiah Estrada took the mound for San Diego with a runner on base and two outs. After walking Tyler Fitzgerald, he faced Heliot Ramos, who also walked, loading the bases. However, Jung Hoo Lee struck out on three pitches, ending the threat.

Kolek, making his sixth major league start, pitched into the sixth inning. He retired pinch-hitter Jerar Encarnacion on an inning-ending groundout after Encarnacion returned from the 60-day injured list due to a hand fracture that required surgery.

Manny Machado had an off night, going hitless for only the seventh time in his last 28 games. The Padres are currently navigating a grueling schedule of 26 games in 27 days through June 25, all against NL West opponents.

Webb and catcher Patrick Bailey executed an inning-ending double play in the second when Wade struck out swinging, and Bailey quickly threw to shortstop Willy Adames to catch Cronenworth attempting to steal second base.

The Giants squandered additional chances, grounding into double plays in both the second and third innings. In the third, designated hitter Wilmer Flores grimaced after being hit by a pitch on his left elbow. Flores expressed visible frustration as he made his way to first base, prompting Padres catcher Elias DΓaz to step in and ease tensions.

Looking ahead, RHP Ryan Bergert (1-0, 0.00 ERA) is set to pitch for San Diego in the second game of the series against Giants RHP Landen Roupp (3-4, 3.54).
