Padres Edge Giants in Extra Innings for Second Straight Night
Manny Machado's stellar performance, featuring four hits, was pivotal as he delivered a two-run single that leveled the score with two outs in the ninth inning. Jake Cronenworth then secured the victory for the San Diego Padres, driving in the go-ahead run in the 10th, leading to a 3-2 win over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night.
Just a day after clinching a narrow 1-0 victory in the series opener, the Padres found themselves needing extra innings once more. Giants closer Camilo Doval faced a challenging situation in the ninth, walking both Fernando Tatis Jr. and Luis Arraez, which loaded the bases for Machado, who ended the night with an impressive 4-for-4 at the plate.
Spencer Bivens (1-2) managed to retire the first two batters in the 10th inning, but Cronenworth's grounder slipped past diving first baseman Casey Schmitt, allowing automatic runner Jackson Merrill to score from third base.
On the mound, Yuki Matsui (1-1) delivered a flawless ninth inning, while Jeremiah Estrada quickly dispatched three batters for his second save. With a runner on third following a sacrifice bunt, Estrada effectively retired Heliot Ramos and Jung Hoo Lee on grounders to shortstop, sealing the game.
San Francisco's only offensive highlight came from Ramos, who hit his 11th home run—a two-run shot in the third inning—but it was insufficient to break the team's ongoing scoring struggles. The Giants have now gone 16 consecutive games scoring four runs or fewer, marking their second-longest such streak since relocating to San Francisco in 1958.
Giants starter Landen Roupp showcased his skills, allowing just four hits over 6 1/3 shutout innings. Meanwhile, Padres rookie Ryan Bergert, recently called up from Triple-A El Paso, made his major league debut and allowed two runs on six hits across five innings.

In a standout defensive moment during the eighth inning, Giants third baseman Matt Chapman executed a remarkable play, snagging Merrill's grounder and completing a double play by stepping on the bag and throwing across the diamond.
Before conceding the tying runs in the ninth, Doval had maintained an impressive streak of not allowing a run over 20 2/3 innings—the longest active streak in Major League Baseball.
Looking ahead, Padres right-hander Nick Pivetta (6-2, 2.74 ERA) is set to face Giants left-hander Kyle Harrison (1-1, 2.51) on Wednesday.
