Marlins Clinch Series with 10th-Inning Surge Against Giants
In a decisive moment, Otto Lopez delivered a crucial RBI single during a four-run 10th inning, propelling the Miami Marlins to an 8-5 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night. This win marks the first time this season that the Marlins have clinched consecutive series victories.
Lopez's pivotal hit off Giants' pitcher Camilo Doval (3-2) broke a 4-4 tie, giving Miami a 5-4 advantage. Following his lead, Heriberto Hernández contributed with a two-run double to left-center, advancing to third base on the throw home. Connor Norby then added a sacrifice fly, solidifying Miami's lead as they extended their winning streak to three games.
In the ninth inning, Miami's closer Calvin Faucher (3-2) faced a challenging situation after inheriting a 4-2 lead. The Giants loaded the bases with two hit batters and a walk, leading to Willy Adames hitting a sacrifice fly that narrowed the score to 4-3.
Patrick Bailey's subsequent single brought Casey Schmitt home, tying the game at 4-4. However, Jung Hoo Lee was thrown out at the plate by Kyle Stowers, preventing the Giants from taking the lead.
Mike Yastrzemski initiated the scoring for San Francisco with a home run that struck the right-field foul pole in the first inning. This marked Yastrzemski's seventh homer of the season and was one of only three hits allowed by Marlins starter Edward Cabrera over 5 1/3 innings.
Lopez also made his mark earlier in the game, hitting a two-run double in the fourth inning, which were the only runs allowed by Giants starter Logan Webb during his six innings of work. Webb recorded six strikeouts while giving up six hits and three walks.
As the game progressed into extra innings, with Bailey on second and two outs in the ninth, Norby made a spectacular play at third base, snagging Christian Koss' line drive to send the game into extra frames.
The Giants struggled with runners in scoring position, going 2 for 9 in such situations and hitting just .136 (8 for 59) over their last eight games.
Looking ahead, Miami's right-handed pitcher Janson Junk (2-0, 2.60 ERA) is set to face San Francisco's Hayden Birdsong (3-1, 3.25) on Thursday.
