Tigers Triumph Over Giants with 3-1 Victory
Wenceel Pérez made an immediate impact in his season debut, launching a home run in his first at-bat, while Jack Flaherty delivered a stellar performance on the mound. The Detroit Tigers defeated the San Francisco Giants 3-1 on Tuesday night, solidifying their position as leaders in the American League.
Pérez, sidelined for the entire season due to a lower back injury, connected on a 2-0 pitch in the second inning, sending the ball 351 feet into right field. This marked his first home run since August 7 of the previous year.
Riley Greene contributed significantly to the Tigers' offense, recording three hits and driving in two runs. With 22 RBIs in May alone, Greene has reached a milestone of 38 RBIs for the season. His batting average stands at .270, complemented by six home runs.
Flaherty (3-6) showcased his skills by pitching six scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and one walk while striking out eight batters. He retired the last 11 hitters he faced, leading the Tigers to their third consecutive victory and improving their record to 36-20. Will Vest closed the game, earning his seventh save.
On the other side, Giants starter Logan Webb (5-5) struggled, giving up three runs on seven hits and one walk over six innings, despite striking out ten batters. The loss dropped San Francisco to 2-3 on their current nine-game road trip.
The scoring began early for Detroit as Greene hit an RBI double in the first inning. Following Pérez's homer in the second, Colt Keith opened the third with a triple and scored on Greene's second hit of the night. Greene added another double in the fifth before striking out in the eighth.
San Francisco managed to score in the ninth inning when Heliot Ramos led off with a single and later crossed home plate on a Wilmer Flores double. Greene made a highlight-reel sliding catch to deny Jung Hoo Lee a hit, and Vest retired the next two batters to seal the victory.
Despite striking out 13 times throughout eight innings, the Tigers maintained their composure. Giants manager Bob Melvin was ejected by home plate umpire Tony Randazzo after a heated argument over balls and strikes during the fifth inning.
Spencer Torkelson, who leads the Tigers in several offensive categories, had a tough night at the plate, going 0 for 4 with three strikeouts. His batting average has dipped to .207, with six home runs and 30 strikeouts over his last 33 games.
The series concludes on Wednesday as Detroit's right-hander Jackson Jobe (4-1, 4.06) is set to face off against San Francisco's RHP Landen Roupp (3-3, 3.63).
