Guardians Rally in 10th to Defeat Tigers 7-5
Cleveland Guardians surged past the Detroit Tigers Saturday night, capitalizing on a four-run 10th inning that turned the tide of the game. Kyle Manzardo and Angel Martínez each delivered crucial RBI doubles, propelling the Guardians to a 7-5 victory.
Bo Naylor contributed significantly, hitting a home run and driving in two runs, including a sacrifice fly during the decisive inning. Nolan Jones also added an RBI single, further extending Cleveland's lead.
With the score tied at three, Manzardo ignited the 10th with an RBI double off Brenan Hanifee (2-2). Following a walk to Carlos Santana, Martínez's double pushed the score to 5-3.
Gleyber Torres attempted to rally for Detroit with a two-run double in the bottom of the inning, narrowing the gap to 7-5. However, Emmanuel Clase managed to secure two outs, sealing the win for Cleveland.
Tim Herrin (4-1) earned the victory after a scoreless ninth inning. The Tigers, who had not lost three consecutive games since the season's opening series, initially led 3-0 after one inning but struggled offensively thereafter, with Torres recording their only two hits for the remainder of the game.
Detroit's early scoring came in the first inning when Kerry Carpenter doubled, followed by a walk to Torres and an RBI double from Colt Keith. Despite Ortiz nearly escaping the inning unscathed by retiring Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson, Zach McKinstry walked, allowing Matt Vierling to hit a two-run single.
Cleveland responded in the third with Naylor's homer and an RBI single from José Ramírez. Ortiz managed to escape a bases-loaded situation later in that inning.
The Guardians tied the game in the eighth when Ramírez singled, advanced to third on Manzardo's hit, and scored on Martínez's grounder to first, beating Torkelson's throw home.
In roster news, Cleveland called up RHP Nic Enright while placing RHP Hunter Gaddis on the bereavement list. Enright has been battling Hodgkin's lymphoma since December 2022 but continues to pitch amid treatment.
After Ramírez's tying hit in the eighth, Cleveland loaded the bases with one out. Tommy Kahnle managed to get Naylor to pop out, and Will Vest came in to retire pinch-hitter Jones on a grounder to second.
Ramírez's third-inning single extended his hitting streak to 17 games. The Tigers and Guardians will conclude their four-game series Sunday morning, with first pitch set for 11:35 a.m. EDT. Detroit ace LHP Tarik Skubal (4-2, 2.87) is scheduled to face LHP Logan Allen (2-2, 3.86).
