Robbie Ray Dominates as Giants Edge Nationals 3-2

May 25 2025

Robbie Ray showcased his pitching prowess on Sunday, delivering six innings of solid work that propelled him to a 7-0 record this season. The San Francisco Giants edged out the Washington Nationals with a final score of 3-2, clinching two out of three games in the series.

Ray's performance was marked by allowing just one run on three hits while striking out seven batters without issuing a walk, which lowered his ERA to an impressive 2.56.

In a tense ninth inning, Washington's CJ Abrams ignited hope with a leadoff double against Giants closer Ryan Walker. James Wood followed suit, driving in Abrams with a one-out double, narrowing the score to 3-2. However, Walker managed to retire the next two batters, securing his 10th save of the season.

Notably, Ray, who won the AL Cy Young Award in 2021 while with Toronto, became only the second pitcher in the last three decades for the Giants to start a season at 7-0, joining Kevin Gausman’s feat from 2021. The Giants have thrived with Ray on the mound, boasting a 10-1 record in his starts.

On the other side, Nationals pitcher Michael Soroka (1-2) also went six innings but allowed three runs on five hits.

Sam Huff made his mark early in the game, launching a powerful shot to left field that ricocheted off the top of the wall and into the Giants' bullpen, putting San Francisco ahead 2-0. Following Huff's homer, Mike Yastrzemski hit a triple off the center field fence and later scored on a groundout by Heliot Ramos.

The Nationals responded in the third inning when Nasim Núñez singled, advanced to second on a groundout, stole third base, and scored on a wild pitch, closing the gap to 3-1.

Ray's May statistics are remarkable: he holds a 4-0 record with a minuscule 1.13 ERA and has racked up 36 strikeouts over 32 innings pitched across five starts this month.

Looking ahead, Giants right-hander Logan Birdsong (2-0, 1.91 ERA) is set to take the mound as San Francisco opens a three-game series against Detroit on Monday. Meanwhile, Nationals left-hander Mitchell Parker (4-3, 4.39 ERA) will start for Washington in their upcoming three-game series against Seattle on Tuesday.
